Investigating the visualisation and sonification of human movement, the art of martial is a real-time interactive installation using kinect video tracking and custom processing code. Each individual limb of the shadow boxer is represented both visually and sonically by one of the four complimentary elements — fire, water, wind and earth. These elements must be balanced in order to achieve harmony within the Taoist concept of the Bagua and the related Chinese Martial Art of Baguazhang. A martial artist who is represented by an even balance of fire, water, wind and earth may be thought of as a well-rounded fighter. The installation represents the velocity and position of each limb with particle trails and dynamic sound effects. The harp soundtrack is generated from the position of each limb and describes the physical stance of the martial artist.
